5 Ways Massage Helps You Let Go of Stress

Life is stressful — there’s no way around it. Whether it’s work, family, politics (a BIG stressor these days!) or just the constant buzz of day to day life, that stress doesn’t stay in your head. It shows up in your body: tight shoulders, a stiff neck, aching lower back. I see it all the time.

 

That’s where massage comes in. I’ve been a massage therapist for 9 years, and my focus is on deep tissue work. My goal is to help your body actually let go — to release the tension that stress builds up over time. When you come in for a massage, it’s quiet, it’s focused, and it’s all about you.

 

Here are five ways massage can make a real difference when stress is weighing you down:

 

1. Releasing Built-Up Tension

 

Stress tends to live in the muscles. Deep tissue massage works past the surface to get into those tight areas so your body can finally relax instead of holding everything in.

Massage isn’t just physical. It signals your nervous system to switch gears — from “fight or flight” mode into “rest and digest.” That shift is what leaves you calmer, breathing easier, and feeling more balanced after a session.

So many clients tell me they sleep better after a massage. That’s because massage helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase serotonin and dopamine — which are important for good sleep and good mood.

When you’re on my table, there’s no need for conversation. I keep my sessions quiet so you can truly check out and give your mind a break. For a lot of people, that peace and stillness is just as valuable as the bodywork. People often fall asleep, which I encourage.

 

5. Teaching the Body to Let Go

 

Here’s an important one: don’t help me move you. That urge to want to “help” is nothing more than your brain feeding into a habit. If I lift your arm, leg, or head, just let it stay heavy. When you resist the urge to assist and allow your body to be fully relaxed, the massage works so much better. It’s all about letting go — physically and mentally.
